This is a concise and complete summary of the Entrepreneurship course (2024–2025), based entirely on the lectures. I scored 15/20 on the exam. It covers essential topics like management, strategy, marketing, legal, and finance in the context of starting and growing a business. Ideal for quick revision and exam preparation.

,ENTREPRENEUR & TEAM
THE ENTREPRENEUR’S MINDSET: WHAT DEFINES A N ENTREPRENEUR?

THE ENTREPRENEUR

Two views

• Two views on what it means to be an entrepreneur and how they identify themselves
o Schumpeter: creational view
▪ Opportunities emerge out of the entrepreneurs’ internal disposition to initiate or create
change.
• Entrepreneurs create their own opportunities based on their knowledge, resources,
… they can destabilize the economy equilibrium and create an impact on the region.
They see an opportunity for change and exploit it
▪ Disturb economic equilibrium
▪ Creative destruction: as the economy evolves, the resources of people and businesses
change over time. So people are competing the hole time for resources and ass an
entrepreneur you should be able to attract those resources to create your own competitive
advantage and try to capture some of the value
o Kirznerian: discovery view
▪ Opportunities are spotted.
• You don’t need to create opportunities bc they already exist but you have to identify
them as an entrepreneur
▪ Information asymmetry
• They have knowledge that others don’t have and that allows them to spot the
opportunities
▪ Knowledge and information gaps
o Integrated view
▪ But both views can also be combined with each other
▪ Exploit change (in)directly

“The reasonable man (woman) adapts himself (herself) to the world. The unreasonable one persists in trying to
adapt the world to himself (herself). Therefore, all progress depends on unreasonable men (and women).” - George
Bernard Shaw

• Captures essence of entrepreneurships bc you need to go against the stream and discover how far you can
go but also bringing people along with you

“An entrepreneur creates and/or exploits change for profit by innovating, accepting risk and moving resources to
areas of higher return (profit).

• We see entrepreneurs as people who create and exploit value, value is based on change they see in society.
Innovation is about change in mindset, programme, process, product, … so entrepreneurs see or create
change and act upon it. Always based on change, impact you want to have on society.
• Civic entrepreneurs?

2

, • Intrapreneurs (entrepreneur in content of venture) ?
• Owning a venture?
• Social entrepreneurs

How entrepreneurial is Belgium?

• Why do you think people are less entrepreneurial in Belgium? Taxes are high, risk aversion, hurdles, …
• ! innovation does not necessary mean entrepreneurial, it’s more RND-effort
• Statistics: we see that Belgium is not so entrepreneurial as we thought
o Main reason; Risk aversion

Drivers of entrepreneurship

• Barriers to entrepreneurship -> stop people
o Need for regular income
o Fear of capital loss
o Fear of the unknown
o Risk aversion
o Doubts about ability
• You also have factors that influence positive feelings about entrepreneurships
• Pull factors: cognitive that define why people would like to be an entrepreneur
o Independence
o Achievement
o Recognition
o Wealth
o Personal development
• Push factors: negative
o Poverty
o Unemployment
o Disagreement
o Organisational misfit
