Shannon W Unit 2: Teamwork and Leadership in the public services D2

Since starting the course in September 2018, I have taken part in various activities that require me to
be a team leader in some way. I feel that the task I felt the most confident doing was leading several
groups of 10 children with a partner, at the local primary school and doing mini games with them.
When they finished our activity, they rotated around to a different one, which was run by another
pair of students from our class, while we then got another group. I think that my style of leadership
during this task was transformational; this is where the leaders try to keep their team motivated by
inspiring them and being a role model. In this case, I tried to keep the group motivated by both
praising and cheering them on throughout the task.

Although I came across quiet and shy throughout the task, I managed to demonstrate the games
correctly and confidently until they all understood what they were doing. I used good
communication skills to ensure I got the message across. Good communication skills were also used
to introduce myself to each group so they knew who I was, as well as to learn all of their names. I
also used both verbal and non-verbal communication during this task. An example of when I used
non-verbal communication was when I was demonstrating, which in this instance was one of my
strengths and an example of verbal communication is when I was interacting and speaking to the
group. However, if I was to do the task again my main aim would be to try and speak louder and
more confidently, as well as trying to step forward and participate as a leader rather than letting my
partner take most of the responsibility to do all of the speaking out loud and instructing. To develop
these skills I need to practise taking more responsibility in group tasks and situations such as,
teambuilding activities or even during sport sessions.

Personally, I don’t think that my style of leadership is appropriate in most cases for tasks like these
because in order to be a successful team leader, I need to be confident and assertive, otherwise I
won’t be able to get the groups full attention at times. Another way to go about this could be to ask
someone to get the groups attention in order for me to speak. On one hand, being a
transformational leader could work in some cases, especially if they are a younger group. This is
because they often get involved more if they are being praised. On the other hand, it may not work
if the group is very disruptive or disobedient because it then requires a more assertive leader in
order for them to listen.

A task that I haven’t lead particularly well is the one where me and my partner had to lead a group
of primary school children and do orienteering with them. This task required them to read a map
and go to the marked positions. They then had to write down what animal was on the sheet located
there. This involved me to use good communication skills and quick thinking. Although I used good
communication skills, I wasn’t confident enough when leading the group. I feel that during this task
in particular I stood back and let my partner take most of the responsibility when delegating and
leading the team. If I was to do this again in future I would try to be both louder and more confident
when speaking.

Overall, I would say that I am more of a team player rather than a team leader. To be a good leader,
I need to be able to have the ability to motivate others within my group because it will inspire and
motivate them to work harder. I also need to improve on my overall communication skills which
include me to be able to clearly and specifically communicate my visions, goals, skills and
expectations to my group. To become a better leader I need to fully understand the strengths that I
do have and use them to my advantage when leading, as well as indentifying my main weaknesses
