• In ancient times, only members of royalty had their interior designed
• Furnishings- objects that tend to increase comfort or utility; especially the furniture
for an interior space in a building
• interior designer- a designer who not only works with furnishings but also
on the planning of the space and the technical systems of a place
• Two main categories:
o Residential- designs homes, apartments, & condominiums
▪ Schedule is often flexible, tasks focused on homeowners’ needs and
wants, smaller budget
o Commercial- designs stores, schools, & commercial spaces
▪ Schedule is tight, tasks focused on making the functional for business,
larger budget
▪ Divided into five main categories:
➢ Civic, educational, & health care
~ Government offices, schools, libraries, childcare facilities,
churches, fire/police stations, post office, hospitals, etc.
➢ Hospitality & recreational
~ Gyms, hotels, resorts, amusement parks, cruise ships,
restaurants, clubs, sports facilities
➢ Commercial & retail
~ Banks, offices, shopping centers, stores
➢ Cultural
~ Museums, concert halls, movie theaters, arenas,
exhibition halls
➢ Other spaces
~ Airports, train stations, factories, workshops, power
plants
• Interior designers make about $50,000/yearly on average
o Most reside in California, Florida, and New York
, o They don’t just decorate. They manage projects, move walls/do architectural
work, research/abide by laws, client presentations, and create moodboards
o They know how plumbing an electrical systems work. Also how spaces
can be changed
• Profession of interior design and decorator cam into being during the mid-
20th century
• Interior decorating is about furnishing, embellishing, and fashioning a space with items
that can be removed.
o They can’t alter a structure of a room, only place stuff in it.

o Have math skills to develop budgets and create scale models
o Understand building codes, safety regulations, and construction techniques
o Know hot to work with many materials and finishes
o Be able to source quality materials at a fair price
