What is Nursing? (1.1) Case Study: Jack Thomas
This assignment will look at the biological, psychological and social factors that affect
Jack Thomas’ care with focus on his fractured distal tibia and fibula, depression and
his absent working mother. These factors will be linked to the role of the nurse
including the nursing process, communication and health promotion. In addition, the
ethical, legal and professional factors will be looked upon with continual referral to
confidentiality.
The biological, psychological and social factors all contribute to what is known as the
biopsychosocial model which provides a holistic approach and allows one to
overview these factors to improve health and well-being (Gentry et al. 2021).
In regards to the case study, the current injury of a fractured distal tibia and fibula will
be the focus of the biological factor. Waugh (2018) states that the distal end of the
tibia allows the formation of the ankle joint with the help of the talus and fibula while
the fibula allows for the stability of the ankle joint. Because the ankle takes the
bodies complete weight, it has possibilities of undergoing large amounts of force (Dr
Lowth, 2016) which when referring back to the case study, explains why Jack
Thomas’ injury came from a skateboarding accident. In the case study it is shown
that both fractures underwent surgical internal intervention in order to place rods and
screws to reconstruct the bones back into position.
