HUMAN REPRODUCTION
Fertilisation: fusion of sperm nucleus with an egg nucleus to form a diploid zygote
Male Reproductive System
Composition
• Primary sex organ: testis
• Ducts: epididymis; sperm duct (vas deferens); urethra
• Accessory glands (e.g. prostate gland)
• External genitalia: penis
Scrotum
• Functions:
- Temperature regulator (testis 2-3˚C cooler than body temperature);
cold = testis pulled closer to abdomen; warm = suspended away from body
- Contains testis
Testis
• Embryonic stage = testis in abdominal cavity; before birth = descend into scrotum
• Consist of lobules of seminiferous tubules (highly convoluted)
• Germinal epithelium line tubules
• Between tubules = endocrine interstitial cells, cells of Leydig
• Functions:
- Produce sperm (by germinal layer) + testosterone (by interstitial cells)
Ducts
• Epididymis (seminiferous tubules combined to form a highly convoluted tubule) functions:
- Immature sperm mature to become motile + fertile
- Sperm is stored (if they stay longer than several months they are broken down by
epithelial cells of epididymis and are reabsorbed)
• Sperm duct/ vas deferens (muscular continuation of epididymis) functions:
- Pushes mature sperm forward by peristaltic waves (strong contractions of smooth inner
walls of ducts) from epididymis to urethra = ejaculation
• Urethra (duct at end of uro-genital system leading to exterior) function:
- Transportation of semen and urine
Prostate gland
Gland that surrounds urethra at base of bladder
Can be removed surgically – old age may enlarge gland, exerts pressure on urethra = takes longer
to empty bladder
• Function:
- Secretes fluid that aids transport of sperm; contains enzymes that increase sperm
activity
Cowper’s gland
Found at base of penis
, • Function: produces mucous-like alkaline fluid when sexually aroused; this fluid:
- Neutralises acidic urine
- Lubricates urethra to protect sperm from damage during ejaculation
Penis
• Urethra passes down penis
• Consists of spongy, erectile tissue
• Three sections of erectile tissue along penis:
- 2 on dorsal side (corpus cavernosa)
- 1 on ventral side (corpus spongiosum)
• Erection: dilation of dorsal and central arteries supplying blood to penis to fill erectile tissue
chambers
• Function:
- Deposits semen with sperm into woman’s vagina during copulation
• What is distinctive about human penis?
- Only mammal with no baculum (erectile bone); relies on engorgement of tissues with
blood
- Not attached to abdominal wall
Seminal fluid (semen)
• Consists of:
- Sperm (testis)
- Seminal fluid (sperm duct + prostate)
Female reproductive tract
Composition
• Ovaries
• Accessory organs: fallopian tubes (oviducts), uterus, vagina
• External genitalia: vulva
Ovaries (2 organs found in pelvic cavity and held in position by ligaments)
• Germinal epithelium surrounds each ovary
• Primary follicles containing immature egg are implanted in outer layer
• Primary follicle matures into Graafian follicle
• After ovulation, Graafian follicle becomes corpus luteum (yellow body)
• Functions: the ovaries:
- Form + release eggs
- Produce oestrogen + progesterone
Fallopian tubes (two muscular tubes lined with cilia; stretch from ovary to uterus)
• Each end in an infundibulum with outgrowths called fimbria
• Functions:
- Provide a pathway between uterus and ovary for eggs, sperm, zygote
- Site of fertilisation and initial cell division of zygote
- Enables egg or developing zygote to move into uterus by muscles and cilia
Uterus (hollow, muscular organ situated between rectum and bladder)
• Enlarges during pregnancy
