this lecture slide is about the introduction to sociology and what sociology is about.

Throughout this piece, I have argued that inequality in South Africa is fuelled by the intersection of gender and care. Throughout this piece, I have argued that development is a serious cause for concern among countries within the African continent. I have considered the usefulness of the opposing theories – the modernisation theory and dependency theory – and come to the conclusion that the modernisation theory is embedded with self-interest and omits the effects of colonialism, whereas the dependency theory’s proposal of ‘de-linking’ would cause catastrophic effects to African economies. Essay includes arguement that some parts of European and North American sociological idealogies are more useful than others, and that modernity served the aims of capitalists/colonialists. Du Bois's 'double consciousness' is discussed, as well as the Copperbelt. I also discuss Marx's theory of alienation.
