Voorbeeld: De flared jeans werden in de jaren 60 gedragen door hippies. Zowel mannen als vrouwen droegen deze broek, waardoor het echt een teken werd van emancipatie.
Tegenwoordig is de flared broek een trend en wordt het dragen ervan meer gezien als het maken van een fashion statement.
Conclusie: De betekenissen van kledingstukken veranderen door de jaren heen. Kleding hebben dus afhankelijk van de tijd een andere betekenis, waar je rekening mee moet houden als je de betekenis van kleding onderzoekt.
