The Era of One-Party Dominance refers to a political phase where a single party maintains continuous control over governance, often due to historical, ideological, or institutional advantages. In India, the Indian National Congress dominated politics after independence, shaping policies and institutions. While elections were held, opposition parties remained weak due to Congress’s broad-based support, leadership, and role in the freedom struggle. Similar patterns have occurred globally, where dominant parties leverage state resources, popular support, or weak opposition to stay in power. However, prolonged dominance can lead to complacency, lack of accountability, and demands for political diversification over time.

The chapter "Era of One-Party Dominance" focuses on
the dominance of the Indian National Congress in the
early years after independence and the factors that
contributed to it. It highlights the political and social
conditions during this period, the challenges to Congress,
and its long-lasting influence on India's political system.

1. The Congress System

After independence, the Indian National Congress
emerged as the dominant political party.

The first general elections (1952) established the
Congress as the most powerful political force, winning a
majority in both Parliament and state legislatures.

Political scientist Rajni Kothari described this as the
"Congress System," where Congress acted as an
umbrella organization accommodating diverse interests.

2. Reasons for Congress Dominance

Historical Legacy: Congress had led the freedom
struggle, earning immense popularity and trust.

, Mass Appeal: It represented diverse sections of society,
including the rural poor, urban elite, and marginalized
groups.

Charismatic Leadership: Leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru,
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and others inspired confidence
in the people.

Organizational Strength: Congress had a well-established
party structure and grassroots presence.

Lack of Strong Opposition: Opposition parties were
fragmented, lacked resources, and were unable to
challenge Congress effectively.

3. First General Elections (1952)

Conducted based on universal adult franchise, marking a
milestone in Indian democracy.

Over 45% of voters participated, and Congress secured
364 out of 489 seats in the Lok Sabha.

Regional parties like the DMK and opposition parties
like the Communist Party of India (CPI) also gained a
foothold, but Congress remained dominant.
