M1: Journal Reflection
What differences exist in social and economic status of the four people described?
The four people described come from various social and economic statuses. Person A
seems to be leading a good life and I would assume in the upper economic class. She is well
traveled having lived in 6 countries and I would assume has traveled to even more. She also
must be well educated because of her occupation as a CEO. Person B strikes me as being young
for already having two children. You do not need a college degree to work at a casino so I am
assuming she doesn’t have one or is working on one during the day. I think of a person working
night shifts (especially while having two kids) as a very hard and dedicated worker. With that
being said, I am assuming she is in a lower class of economic status. Person C seems like a
typical middle-class person. The fact that he is a pastor in a large denominational church makes
me think he is middle class economically and probably has a large social group as he would
come into contact with many people through the church. Person D’s social and economic status
are low considering he is in prison. The fact that he is not married and does not have any kids
leads me to think that maybe he has been in prison for a while already.
What was your gut reaction when hearing the medical diagnosis’?
When hearing about person A having dementia, I felt sad. She has led such a long and
what seems like unique life and for all those memories and experiences to go away just breaks
my heart. I was also sad when learning that person B has ovarian cancer. I right away started
asking myself questions. How will she take care of her children and continue to work a night
shift while going through chemo? Who will take care of her? How is she going to pay her
