NFHS Softball Exam with Questions and Answers What is the ruling for an illegal pitch when there are no runners on base? a. Ball is awarded to the batter b. Strike is called on the batter c. Batter is declared out d. Play continues without penalty Correct Answer: a Rationale: In NFHS softball, an illegal pitch with bases empty results in a ball being awarded to the batter. The penalty is designed to disadvantage the pitcher without immediately penalizing the defense with outs or strikes. It ensures fairness by counting the pitch against the pitcher’s control. Which statement best defines obstruction under NFHS rules? a. Any contact between a runner and fielder results in interference b. A fielder with the ball is blocking a basepath legally at all times c. A fielder without possession of the ball and not in the act of fielding impedes a runner d. A coach physically blocks a runner from advancing Correct Answer: c Rationale: Obstruction occurs when a defensive player, without possession of the ball and not actively fielding it, impedes the progress of a runner. Intent is not required for obstruction to be called. The runner is protected and may be awarded bases depending on the umpire’s judgment.
