This is an Example of the structure for how to write a Conceptual Art (Question 2) Essay. For this Essay I received 100%. I Received a distinction for Visual Art in Matric and this is the format I followed. This is applicable to Grade 10-11 as well. (Note: In no way do I state that this is the only way to write the essay structure wise. In no way do I state that this will be correct in all circumstances. This Essay is merely to be regarded as a guideline. Please do use your own writing style and apply your own knowledge, opinions and observations. There may be better written essays out there however this is my own personal writing style and so it worked for me.)

ESSAY: CONCEPTUAL ART c.1960 up until the Present [30 Marks]

Statement for Response Essay:

Any reaction against realism is welcomed, even by the public.
Realism is too limited and too prosaic; it confines attention to a commonplace observation
of material things and common-place statements of recognized emotions.
(Text sourced and adapted from: G. M. Turnell. 1937. The Criterion. P551.)

Present an essay in which you discuss THREE artworks in THREE DIFFERENT modes by THREE
different artists and/or architects to substantiate your response to the statement.

Are any reactions against Realism welcomed, even by the Public?

I agree with the statement to the extent that many reactions against realism may have been
welcomed by the general public, however there were numerous works which were not. A It is

Conceptual Art is art that intentionally goes against the tradition of creating ‘pretty’ or
aesthetic art. A Many times in Conceptual Art, acts against were unwelcome. This is because
Conceptual Art intentionally sets out to confront the viewer as it wanted intellectual
engagement between the viewer and the work to enhance and deepen understanding. A
Realism was not the only movement that could be said to confine itself to common-place
observation of material things and common-place statements of recognized emotion as
Conceptual Art also makes use of many, everyday, ‘mundane’ objects in its presentation. A

A point in case of a work that was unwelcome by the general public is This little Piggy went
to market, This little Piggy went home, W by Damien Hirst. a The work consists of two sides
of a halved pig preserved in tanks of formaldehyde solution. D

(Method 1: Fact. Argument. Fact. Argument. Etc.)
This work was an act against the public’s sense of realism as although it is a real pig, it
displays what was normally unseen by the public eye. R The work was displayed on the
London Docks accompanied by the sound of screeching wheels which echoed the sound of
squealing of pigs. F This display may have been unwelcome by the general public as they
may have found it too shocking to engage with when passing by. A The work aimed to
