, QUESTION 1
1. According to Christie, what purposes do schools serve?(5)
- The primary purpose of a school is to provide an environment
where teaching and learning take place.
- An important purpose of schooling is to prepare people for the
world of work beyond school.
- Nation-building and citizenship – political goals – are the key
purposes of schooling.
- In a democracy, public education – schooling – is one of the major
vehicles for teaching the values of a society to children and young
adults.
- Education is about the development of the individual.
2. According to Christie, what is the role of critical intellectuals in
education?(10)
The role of critical intellectuals in education is to continue to
question, probe and explore what exists. The challenge is not to view
what exists as inevitable and unchanging – and not to underestimate
the task of changing what exists. The task is to keep envisaging
alternatives, to keep challenging with new ideas, and to keep
pressing against the boundaries of common sense towards
something better. The task is always to hold an ethical position on
education, which entails a commitment to continuously thinking
about how we may best live with others in the world we share. The
task of educators is to enrich debates from within educational
discourses. To change schooling in South Africa, more radical
measures are needed to reduce social injustices and work towards
greater equity. Educators need more resources and support directed
towards poor schools. Educators need support for teachers and
principals to work towards building professionalism based on
capacity as well as accountability.
