Answer: The helping relationship is a constant throughout the counselling or
psychotherapeutic process.
The definitive characteristics already presented in the study guide indicate that the
relationship must be
present from the initial meeting between the client and the counsellor or therapist and
continue through
closure.

Why is Counselling different to other helping relationships? (3)
Answer: The counselling relationship is unique to other forms of helping for various reasons.
One reason is due to the special form of communication that takes place between the client
and counsellor. A primary difference between counselling & other forms of helping is the way
in which counsellor's listen.

What is cultural empathy? (3)
Answer: Cultural Empathy is the capacity, within a person, to identify with the feelings,
thoughts and behaviour of individuals from different cultural backgrounds. Cultural Empathy
term denotes the ability of the counsellor to empathize oneself in the position of a foreigner
or different culture client so as to understand their perspective. It allows us to share their
feelings and emotions and to clearly understand them.
