Memory - Practice Questions

. Describe the phonological loop component of the WMM.
4

The phonological loop of the working memory model deals with auditory
information, and preserves the order in which the information arrives. It is
divaricated into two segments - a phonological store, which stores the
words that you hear, and an articulatory process, which allows for
maintenance rehearsal to take place. The coding of this segment is all
acoustic, and the capacity lasts for approximately 2 seconds.

. Suggest one way in which the working memory model might be a
better explanation of short-term memory than the multi-store
model.
3
There is proven evidence that short-term memory is made up of multiple
stores. The multi-store model indicated that it was made up of only one
store, so it does not support the evidence that proves there is more than
one store. However, the working memory model suggested that there were
multiple stores for short-term memory, further supporting the evidence
that was found.

. Two types of long-term memory are procedural memory and
episodic memory. Explain two differences between procedural
memory and episodic memory.
2
One difference between the two is how with episodic memories you have
to make a conscious effort to recall them, whereas with procedural
memories recall happens without awareness or effort. Another difference
is that episodic memories are time-stamped, due to the fact that they are
episodes from our lives. Procedural memory is contrary to this, as it stores
memories for our actions or skills.

. Memory studies are sometimes criticised for being unrealistic.
1 Briefly explain two ways that this could be addressed in memory
research.
