aware of the way the beans are being grown and that they are in
the best possible quality. Their tea and coffee, supplied by
Taylors of Harrogate, their partners, who are known to be a part
of the ethical tea partnership, working towards making their tea

Features of Bettys:
The private sector is a business that isn’t controlled by the government, the profit they earn is out of
the sales they make which allows employees of the company to receive raises in their pay. Betty’s
Tea Room is a private business, as it is a family founded business, not controlled by the government
and their business earns a profit from the sales they make.

Scope:
The scope is where the businesses operate. A local business is one that sells its products and services
to customers in its own local city, district, or geographic area. Betty’s is a local business as there are
several café’s within the local scope of Yorkshire.

Purpose:
The purpose of Betty’s tea room is to be family friendly through the baking and cooking workshops
for people of all ages, and to make a profit from serving customers through the café and gift shop.

Sector:
The secondary sector, consists of the stage in which the raw materials are transformed into
manufactured goods, this sector has developed at 20% of the workforce are involved in this making.
Examples of this would include: converting wood into furniture, raw wool being woven, steel into
cars and so on. Tertiary activities consists of services, direct to the customer, known as the service
sector. This includes services such as transport, hotels, sales, retail and more.

Betty’s Tea Room is in both the secondary and tertiary sector. It is part of the secondary sector, as it
provides services to their customers by serving food items and sales of their chocolate gift boxes
made from raw material, in this case coffee beans or flour for baking in workshops are used and
produced into food and drinks. It is also a part of the tertiary sector as their raw materials (cocoa) is
grown on a farm located in Venezuela by the Franceschi family and their tea is provided by Taylors of
Harrogate which is their business partner.

Type of ownership:
Betty’s is an incorporated business, giving shareholders limited liability, this is where it guarantees
shareholders will only lose the amount they invested and are not liable for the debts if the company
fails. This is due to the fact that incorporated companies are a separate legal entity, making the
company owners shareholders and are not liable for the debts. This is an advantage to them as it
guarantees that the shareholders will only lose the amount they invested in the business and are not

, liable for the companies debts if it fails. However, a disadvantage of this would be that they have to
stick to the record-keeping requirements, and all the company’s accounts have to be published to
the public every year allowing their competitors to see.

It is a private limited company this is where the ownership of shares are restricted, all current
shareholders have to agree to sell shares before being able to. Examples of this include companies
that are not as well-known such as Marriott hotels India. This is an incorporated, therefore being a
limited liability as shareholders are only responsible for the amount they invested in the business.
An advantage of this ownership would be that shareholders have limited liability. Shareholders have
a lot of control over how the business is managed as they must all agree in order to sell shares. As
private limited companies are seen as less risky by the bank, it is easier for them to get loans which
increases their access to finance. However, these companies have to publish their accounts once a
year which allow competitors to gain insight. There is also an advanced fee that needs to be paid
before incorporating a business which may not be possible for new firms. Advantages of this would
be the amount of control shareholders have over how the business is managed, due to the fact that
they must all agree before selling shares to a buyer. As private limited companies are seen as less
risky by the bank, it is easier for them to get loans which increases their access to finance. However,
these companies have to publish their accounts once a year which allow competitors to gain insight.
There is also an advanced fee that needs to be paid before incorporating a business which may not
be possible for new firms.

History:
Betty’s has been in business since 1919, which has been running for over 100 years. This began
when a Swiss orphan named Fritz, who was orphaned at age 5 and was fostered by a farmer, which
led Fritz to spend the majority of his childhood working in unpaid farm labor. After this stage of his
life, he travelled across France and Switzerland expanding his knowledge on being a confectioner
and chocolatier after being trained as an assistant baker. He then settled in Harrogate after
miscommunication and arriving at the wrong location during his arrival in London, during this time
he identified himself as a chocolate specialist and changed his name to Fredrick Belmont, he married
his landlady’s daughter, Claire, and with the help of their family’s finance, they opened Betty’s in July
1919. In 1924, Betty’s chocolate boxes were developed, which was a box of chocolates in special
packaging. During this time an illustration of ‘lady Betty’ was created which triggered the inspiration
in developing their new product the lady betty peppermint creams chocolate box. The company
then expanded to Bradford and Leeds.
