Unit 19 – Pitching a business idea
Learning Aim A – Explore potential ideas for a micro-business start up
Introduction
What is a micro business?

A micro business is a business that operates on a very small scale. These businesses have fewer than
five employees, including the owner and have assets valued at less than £200,000 a year.

P1 – Describe the potential business opportunities for a micro business
start-up
Micro business idea 1 – Ice Cream Shop

This business idea would come under the FMCG a.k.a CPG industry (Consumer packaged goods).

The ice cream industry is a good idea because statistically it has a large mark-up value. It also has a
large consumer base as people of all ages can enjoy ice cream. It is also a chance for people to easily
work their way up in the ranks and possibly start their own business.

When working in an ice cream shop some activities that you would undertake are: serving ice cream
to customers, placing orders to restock, keeping track of sales, advertising, and accounting

In the ice cream shop, the business would have a flat structure. This is because it would only include
the employer and his employees.

Micro business idea 2 – Hair Salon

A hair salon is a business where men and women go to get their haircut, styled, and dyed. This
business would come under the health and beauty industry. This business is a good idea because
people of all ages and genders are constantly getting their hair treated and done, meaning there is
always a rise in revenue.

When working in a hair salon, daily activities that you could be doing are: keeping track of sales,
doing people's hair, and advertising, ordering new products or restocking

Thus business has a flat structure because it only involves the employer and the employees.

, Micro business idea 3 - Florist

A florist is a person who sells and arranges cut flowers. This business falls under the agriculture
industry. This business is a good idea because they set their own work hours and work in a creative
environment. To work in this business you do not need a special license or education, although
having some courses in design will help.

Floristry is the production, commerce and trade in flowers. It involves flower care, handling,
designing, arranging, merchandising, and display and flower delivery.

This business would be considered to have a flat structure because it only involves the employer and
the employees.

P2 – Review the factors that need to be considered to start up a micro-business

Internal factors

One internal factor that can affect a micro business is Human resources. This relates to the people
who work in the business i.e. managers and employees.

For a manager, they can influence the business through their decision making. Making good
decisions can increase productivity which could in turn increase profits and help the business to
expand. Poor decision making can result in less productivity and complaints from customers.
Employees are the public face of a business, therefore their actions can affect the business in
