Set1. What is intrapreneurship? How can a business organisation incentivise it and benefit
from it?
In this essay I will explain what an intrapreneurship is and how business organisation can encourage
it within the company and the benefits of this for the company. I will be using examples to back up
my findings and to back up the theory behind it.
To understand intrapreneurship, we need to understand entrepreneurship. It is about discovering
and chasing opportunities that may arise, taking risks and focus mainly on the concept of
opportunity even if the idea may fail. On the other hand, intrapreneurship is about creating and
discovering new business opportunities which then may result into creating new parts of a current
business or crating new businesses (Riley, 2016). Intrapreneurs are employees within a business and
they are involved in creating new creative ideas or products for the business.
Many businesses are starting to see the benefits of introducing intrapreneurship into their business.
It helps businesses come up with new ideas or different ways of doing a monotone task. Individual
group of people in already established organisation are working on creating something new and
beneficial for the company. Google is offering 20% timeframe on developing personal projects that
are related to the business. One of the many successful projects that came from encouraging
intrapreneurship was Gmail that launched in 2014 (Upadhyaya, 2017).
By creating intrapreneurial environment, we can encourage employees to develop those
intrapreneurship skills and by doing this they can benefit the company in many ways. To establish
this kind of environment certain factors will need to be implemented. It is important that the
company is operating on the latest technology, this will mean the employees have much bigger
chances of developing new ideas and upgrading the way business operates. Also, it is crucial for the
business to encourage and support new ideas that are being passed forwarded from employees.
Research and development teams are needing to operate on the latest technology as mentioned
before, as this will encourage new ideas to be generated (Hisrich, 1990).
Another way of encouraging firms to start implementing intrapreneurship is through providing small
firms with program that will help them to brainstorm profitable innovations. Intrapreneur Lab is a
company that help to develop those ideas through program that can last 3 days to 3 months.
Company focuses on the core business strengths and then they try to innovate them (Balch, 2017).
Organisation can incentivise intrapreneurship and then benefit from this. All companies can do it
regardless of the firm size.

We need to consider that intrapreneurs have entrepreneurial characteristics and skills that help
them to operate within the organisation and maintain new ideas. Usually intrapreneurs are referred
to as “dreamers who do” this would mean that they are always keen on taking on the responsibilities
and creating new innovations. Each employee can identify weakness within the company and they
can think of ways to improve it or bring in something new. This is beneficial for the organisation as
not only they are staying ahead of their competition by having an internal progress within the
company, they can bring them into the market and be more innovative.
It is beneficial as intrapreneurship can link into new markets in an emerging economy. If the
company meets the needs of the market, then a new business venture grows and employment
increases. (Bianca, 2011)
To conclude this, I think that more organisations should start implementing intrapreneurial culture
into their business as there are many benefits from it. Like Google, most companies should allocate
their employees with personal time to work on projects that are related to company. In that way
employees can be more creative and come up with innovative ideas that could help the
organisation.
