Public Health – Chronic Kidney Disease

 The prevalence and incidence of CKD End Stage Renal Disease in
different countries
 The public health policy implications of different rates of disease and
different rates of treatment
 The rates of different forms of treatment in different countries
 How these different rates relate to medical, demographic and socio-
economic factors

Chronic deterioration of kidney functions occurs over months/years. So what is the
cost on us due to CKD.
Chronic kidney disease is not a disease that is dealt with by the kidney doctors only.

So if you are a GP who is lead clinician for CKD, how do you
-Identify patients with kidney disease? -> By testing GFR, using creatinine! Also by
testing urine for protein etc.

-How do you prevent death and disability caused by CKD? -> REDUCE BP!! As CKD
patients often die due to CVD. Also control diet and any CVS risk factors.

-How do you identify individuals at risk for kidney failure? -> If you see a clear
decline in GFR

-How do you prevent CKD?

Public Health

Public health is the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and
promoting health.
-> Through organised efforts and informed choices of society, organisations, public
and private, communities and individuals.

CKD and Public Health, Why is it a Public Health Issue?

CKD is common, easily identifiable and treatable. There is a high mortality associated
with it. CKD also costs a lot of money to manage and resources are limited, most
especially in developing nations. Hence, for this reason CKD is a public health issue.

So the public health things we need to look at with regards to CKD are:

1 – Definition and identification
2 – The prevalence
3 – The epidemiology (age, hypertension, diabetes, ethnicity)
4 – The treatment, (primary prevention -> identify target groups, secondary
prevention -> CVD and dialysis)
