Cultural variations = the ways that different groups of people vary in terms of
their social practices, and the effects these practices have on development and
behaviour.

● Culture = rules, customs, morals and ways of interacting that BIND together
members of a society or some other collection of people
● Learn the rules, customs, etc. through SOCIALISATION in order to interact
appropriately with other members of our culture
● Doesn’t mean ‘country’ or ‘society’ - different groups with their own rules and
customs can coexist in a single country
,Subculture
● Group within a country that, although shares many dominant cultural
characteristics of that country, may also have some special, different
characteristics
, Individualist cultures
● Western cultures e.g. ours and American culture
● Value INDEPENDENCE and importance of the INDIVIDUAL
