Below is a model personal statement for a secondary school mathematics
teaching course. It’s separated into headings/sections which could help structure
your personal statement and has an explanation of what each section needs to
include:
Introduction
This is where you talk about why you want to study this course and what about it
appeals to you. Common reasons include it being a childhood passion, something
which broadens your intellectual horizons or maybe just something that intrigues
you and makes you want to find out more. In this section, you MUST say why the
subjects you are taking at A Level or as a diploma relate to the degree you want
to study. This is where you need to make your personal statement stand out
from the crowd and really sell yourself.
Having enjoyed studying Mathematics at A Level I have chosen a degree which
will enable me to explore the different branches of Mathematics such as
Statistics, Algebra and Trigonometry even further. From a young age, I was
fascinated by the way numbers work and studying patterns in them. This interest
has increased as I have got older. I enjoyed learning about new concepts like
Integration and Differentiation. I took pleasure from solving equations and
discovering new concepts. I also liked seeing the methods of solving a question
and the sequential nature of them. Hence, I’m very keen to broaden my
knowledge of the subject and learn new concepts of Mathematics so I can
become an effective secondary school maths teacher.
Other Subjects
Here you mention the other subjects you study and how they might help you
succeed in this degree. If any of the subjects you study at A Level or diplomas
involve writing essays, then it is worth mentioning that this will help you
complete this degree - as almost every degree involves academic writing.
I enjoyed studying English Language at A Level because it was interesting
analysing texts using a set framework of techniques. This helped me develop
more of an analytical mind and a better ability to find the answer to a solution.
Geography was another subject which helped me broaden my horizons as I
learned more about the wider world and what goes on in it. I also improved my
statistical skills from the analysis we did of data and spreadsheets. Taking Politics
allowed me to convey my opinion better and taught me how to arrive at a
conclusion after presenting a balanced argument. The assignments we did in the
subject allowed me to develop essay writing skills which helped me to structure
my answers more academically.
