Equality means to treat everyone equally regardless of race, disability, age, gender, religion,
beliefs, culture and sexual orientation. The practice of equality is important for service users
because it makes sure all their needs are met and no one is treated less due to their
background. It makes sure everyone is treated fairly and they receive the care services they
require.

Diversity is to appreciate and respect other backgrounds, including race, religion, ethnicity,
culture, disabilities, appearance and sexuality. The use of diversity is needed to meet service
users’ needs as it means service providers can help the individuals whilst also respecting
their beliefs. Promoting diversity is important in health and social care settings as it means
that differences between people will be appreciated and people's beliefs, cultures and
values will be treated with respect.

A social worker would promote equality and diversity for Billy by carrying out the necessary
procedures without showing any personal prejudice. A social worker’s role would be to find
Billy a safe home and make sure he is happy and healthy, whilst taking into account Billy’s
differences, but not discriminating against him for them. Equality and diversity are
important for Billy in meeting his individual needs as he needs to be helped, but service
providers must not treat him unfairly because he’s homeless or visually impaired. If equality
and diversity are not promoted when dealing with Billy, it could have negative effects on his
health, both physical and mental.

Aisha would require a carer who promotes equality and diversity as Aisha is an old woman
who lives alone and has vascular dementia. Aisha is also a practising Buddhist. Her carer
would need to be understanding and respectful of Aisha’s beliefs whilst also ensuring she is
safe. It is important for equality and diversity to be promoted for Aisha when meeting her
needs because she may need time to pray or meditate, and her carer needs to make sure
she gets time to do this. If equality and diversity are not promoted for Aisha, it can have a
serious impact on her. As someone with dementia who can hear voices of her dead friends,
praying and meditating may be the only peace she can get, and if this isn’t respected by
health professionals, it may make her condition worse.

Discrimination is the prejudicial treatment of people and groups based on characteristics
such as race, gender, age, disabilities, beliefs or sexual orientation. Unfair discrimination
means treating a person less favourably than others in the same circumstances on the
grounds of their disability, race, ethnic origin, nationality, religion, sex, sexual orientation,
marital status or age (protected characteristics). Direct discrimination is the term that
applies if you treat someone less favourably than someone else has been treated (or would
be treated) because of a protected characteristic. Indirect discrimination is the term that
describes situations when policies, practices or procedures are put in place that appear to
treat everyone equally but, in practice, are less fair to those with a certain protected

,characteristic. Positive discrimination is when preferential treatment is shown to those with
protected characteristics rather than due to their suitability or ability.

It is crucial to prevent discrimination when meeting individuals’ needs to ensure service
users get the help and care they need and they are treated as equals, not as less than
others. Discrimination against service users can leave them feeling unsafe and unable to ask
for help, although they need it. It can lower their self-esteem and ruin their self-image.

The Equality Act 2010 is a law that protects individuals from discrimination. It applies to
individuals with protected characteristics: age, gender reassignment, being married or in a
civil partnership, being pregnant or on maternity leave, disability, race including colour,
nationality, ethnic or national origin, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.

Billy may face discrimination due to the fact that he is visually impaired. This would be
unfair and direct discrimination, as he would be treated unfavourably because of a
disability, which is a protected characteristic. Being discriminated against could lead to Billy
feeling insecure about himself and unsafe around care providers, although they are meant
to be the ones to help him. This discrimination could be avoided by appointing a health
professional, who is experienced with those with a visual impairment, to help Billy.

Aisha may face discrimination due to her religion, which is a protected characteristic. This
type of discrimination would be unfair and direct. Being discriminated against would make
an old woman with dementia like Aisha feel unsafe, scared and confused, especially if the
acts of discrimination are coming from those who are meant to help her. This type of
discrimination could be avoided by only allowing those who are not prejudiced to help
Aisha. Care services could also be strict with who they employ, making sure everyone is
respectful of others’ backgrounds.


A.P2 Explain the skills and personal attributes necessary for professionals who care
for individuals with different needs.

and establishing trust with individuals with needs.


A skill is an ability to undertake a certain task. Skills are needed in health and social care
settings for tasks that include communicating effectively or giving an injection. Personal
attributes are qualities or characteristics of a person. Personal attributes are important in
health and social care settings as it allows the service provider to build a good relationship
with the service user. Using a range of skills and personal attributes can promote equality
and diversity: communication skills and observational skills will make it easy for a care giver
to notice if a service user is feeling mistreated; personal attributes such as empathy, honesty
and trust will allow for the service user to feel safe and trusting of the service provider.

, These skills and attributes and others, including patience, being understanding and open-
mindedness, can help service providers when dealing with difficult situations.
The 6Cs stand for care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and
commitment. These were introduced in December 2012, following the poor treatment and
lack of care towards the patients at Mid Staffordshire and Winterbourne View. The 6Cs have
been put into place to ensure that patients are being treated properly and care providers
care to the best of their ability. Care is needed as providing care is what health professionals
do. They need to show care towards everyone they come across, and this includes all types
of health professionals. Compassion is important as it helps to create a caring and
supportive environment for patients. Compassion can be shown by being understanding and
empathetic, like when a patient is feeling stressed out or nervous and they need to be
calmed down, reassured or comforted. Competence is one of the 6Cs because it ensures
that professionals have the necessary knowledge and skills to provide safe and effective
care. Communication is needed in health and social care settings as health professionals
need to be able to communicate effectively, because this ensures that patients are getting
the help they need. Good communication also builds a good relationship between the
patient and the health professional. Health professionals are expected to show courage so
that they can deal with difficult situations and do the right thing, despite how they feel.
They are also expected to be committed; committed to the job and to the patients.
Commitment demonstrates dedication to the patients and their wellbeing.
The 6Cs are important characteristics for professionals to possess while caring for service
users like Billy, as they need to form a strong relationship with him. It isn’t easy to build a
good relationship like that with people like Billy because it would take a lot more to get him
to trust you, as he was left homeless after his mother neglected him due to Billy’s conflicts
with her boyfriend. At the same time, because Billy is homeless, he may cherish the ties he
has with professionals even more than he values his relationship with his mother. Because
of this uncertainty and lack of trust, Billy would need to be treated with care and
compassion to aid him in getting the help he needs.
The 6Cs would need to be practised when caring for Aisha because she is an old woman
with dementia, who has no one left. She needs to be treated with care as she can get
confused, but it’s not her fault and this is what care providers need to understand. The
health professional dealing with her would also need to show commitment, as it may get
difficult to help her sometimes, but she needs someone patient who really cares for her.
Gaining the abilities and personal qualities necessary to create a solid relationship with
Aisha requires a great deal of compassion, as well as displaying trust, understanding,
patience, and empathy. You must be an active listener and confident communicator before
observing and monitoring any changes. This will help you learn more about Aisha's skills
rather than just her limitations.
The 6Cs can help health professionals prevent discrimination by promoting key values such
as compassion and respect. Healthcare providers who practice these values treat all patients
the same, regardless of their background, race, or any other protected characteristic. By
embracing these values in a health and social care setting, it creates a protected
environment where the patients feel safe and cared for.
