Policy Impacts
Police
Finance
When the government chose to cut the amount of money that they make
available to the police it had a massive impact on them as there are less
officers being employed which is causing there to be a higher workload for the
officers that are currently employed, this is making more officers go off sick
because they are stressed with the extra workload. By this happening there is a
backlog of work that hasn’t been completed, this is making officers spend more
time completing this rather than being on the streets carrying out patrols. This
varies from station to station as some districts will cut how much money they
put into maintaining equipment and buying new equipment. There is also the
issue of officers having less training while in the police, this means any new
officers will not be as highly trained as more experienced officers were when
they first started, so the level of service is decreasing. By not providing training
for current officer’s, they are not able to develop their skills further. The
impact all of this can have on society is, there are less patrols on the streets, so
crime is going undetected. With the police budgets being cut police are having
to ignore petty crimes as they don’t have the resources or the time to deal
with them. So, they are not being able to provide a service to everyone as they
tend to focus on more serious crimes. Society has reacted to these cuts by
taking part in more crimes such as, thefts, this is occurring more as the
individuals doing it know there is a chance they will get away with it as the
police are too busy with other more significant jobs. Cutting the budget across
all public services is having a massive impact on how the United Kingdom is
operating as there are not as many public servants, this is causing there to be
longer waiting times while in hospitals as there are not as many nurses and is
taking the fire brigade a longer time to respond to calls as many rural fire
stations have been closed meaning crews have to travel further out of their
catchment. The fire service responded to these cuts by striking infront of their
stations, this impacted society as people within the community were angry as
their lives were being put in danger.

, Throughout the public services there is less training which is causing current
members to mentor new recruits as they are highly skilled and have expertise
in the required field.
Equal Opportunities
This is something that is becoming more important within the police as they
need to reflect the communities that they’re in. So, having the presence of
different ethnicities and women is now encouraged more as this reflects the
communities. Equal opportunities will focus on equal pay between men and
women, individuals are now employed based on their skills rather than
characteristics and while in the job they are now treated the same. The
introduction of the Equal Pay Act, Sex Discrimination Act and Race Relation Act
has changed how the police now operate with their officers and members of
the public. With the Equal opportunities policy men and women within the
police can impact the requirements of the uniform as head coverings and
turbans are allowed. This has impacted society as people of different
ethnicities are trusting the police more because there is now a better
understanding of the different cultures. People are now applying to join the
police as they believe the opportunities are now equal between men and
women, this is helping the police in reaching the targets they have been set in
the employing different people. Society is benefiting from different ethnicities
within the police as they feel they are having more support from the police and
there is a better understanding of the different cultures. This is helping society
as there are more female officers to deal with sensitive issues and more
officers with different ethnic backgrounds that can go to the areas within the
community that are predominantly the same culture. The public services are
trying to encourage equal opportunities as this shows we are a multi-cultural
country; this is helping communities as the people of different ethnicities can
see we are trying to develop our services to match what ethnicities are in the
community. This has now caused the public services to have specific targets
when it comes to employing females and individuals with different ethnicities, I
believe this to a good objective for the public services as it guarantees they are
adhering to the targets.
