Managing An Event
Daniel Vroy
Analysing own skills and those required by an event organiser,
highlighting areas for development.
The skills that are required to be an effective event planner are:
organisational, problem solving, time management, negotiation,
communication and interpersonal.
In the semantic differential scale, the score that I gave myself for
problem solving skills is 3. The reason why I gave myself a 3 is that I
have always been quite good at solving problems in an efficient way,
which allows me to get through certain activities and tasks without
struggling too much. I am able to keep a positive attitude during
problems and always find a way to manage a solution in difficult
situations, which is very helpful. Despite being good with problem solving
skills, they are not the same problem solving skills of an event planner.
Therefore, they need to be improved to a higher level and developed
into better. I will try and do so by firstly trying to identify the problem and
remaining calm. Once I do that, I will then define the main elements of
the problem and then finally examine possible solutions to overcome the
problem as a whole. What I'm going to do to better is stay cool, accept
the problem, and then shift my focus to a solution oriented attitude,
where I keep thinking about what went wrong and how to overcome the
problem without stressing about it too much.
For time management skills, the score that I gave myself on the
semantic differential scale is 4. The reason why I gave myself a lower
score for this skill is because I know from my own experience that I
usually struggle with tasks and very often I need a bit of extra time. As
an event organiser, keeping with tasks on time and planning efficiently is
a strong requirement so if I want to meet that criteria I would have to
improve on my time management skills as soon as possible and develop
them making them stronger and better. I will do so by starting my tasks
earlier and focusing on one task at a time. I will set small deadlines for
each task and this will help me manage them better and actually allow
me to complete them on time. I will have to start prioritising tasks and
learn to stay away from distractions and this will help me manage my
