Criminology and Sociology is a course that interests me because it affects every aspect
of life and opens up a plethora of new ideas, it’s hard to pinpoint my initial interest as it
came from multiple sources but it was developed in various different ways. For
example, criminological topics are often depicted in modern pop culture such as films
documenting the life of serial killers Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Bundy.
Furthermore, my interest has been developed through my experience of studying
English language. On this course we touched on academic ideas of sociology such as
Deborah Cameron’s diversity model which delves into gender and sexuality theory, this
interested me as there was no right or wrong answer to how someone identified their
gender and showed that everyone experiences life differently. Moreover, I was
interested by ideas proposed by Judith Butler and her gender 'Performativity' theory,
this presents the argument that language is a tool used to project an identity that
conforms to reinforce gender stereotypes and societal norms. Studying English has
enhanced my analytical skills, this can be shown in my language investigation
coursework. I explored the media representation of female serial killers by using the
framework areas of lexis and semantics in relation to linguistic theories such as the
dominance and difference model.
I also enjoyed studying Business, especially the units that revolve around marketing as I
find it intriguing to know how people's attention can be directed in a way that companies
control, for example using specific colours on ads to make people emote in a way that
would help increase sales. As well as marketing techniques I was engrossed by a
psychological aspect in management, this is called Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and it
illustrates what an individual looks for in terms of motivational aspects at work. The
model can be divided into five different sections, four levels of deficiency needs and one
of growth needs. Deficiency needs arise due to deprivation and are said to motivate
people when they are unmet, the motivation to fulfill such needs will become stronger
the longer the duration they are denied. For example, the longer a person goes without
food, the hungrier they will be. It is a fascinating subject to consider as it breaks down
basic human stimulus. Additionally, Business enhanced my skills in meeting deadlines
and I am confident working both independently and as part of a team during group
tasks.
Throughout my academic career at Sixth Form I have participated in numerous events.
A highlight was a two week internship at EY Foundation during my summer break; being
selected for this placement proved an exciting opportunity as it was with a big company
that taught me how to network quickly. In this role I worked towards a level 2 CMI
qualification in team leading and attended various talks on the service lines in EY. One
such talk was on tax and I completed tasks such as filing some made up tax returns.
However, my favourite talk during EY was one on Advisory which was then split up into
