UNIT 3 ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 1.3 - EXPLAIN HOW EVIDENCE IS
PROCESSED (6 MARKS)
TYPES OF EVIDENCE? There are different types of evidence collected
because of a crime one being physical evidence
PHYSICAL EVIDENCE –
Physical evidence which is also reffered to as factual evidence is
evidence that consists of tangible articles or materils found at a
cime scene or connected to a crime that can help find facts in an
investigation.
Physical evidence includes bodily fluids/tissues, (blood, semen,
saliva, fingerprints) , impression evidence - (shoe prints), trace
evidence – glass fragments, clothing fibres)
Initially any physical materia that can prove a crime has been
commited or can link a crime and its victim to its perpetrator.
This type of evidence can include things like fingerprints , ahir ,
fibres , weapons , blood and other biological samples such as
semen.Physical evidence includes anything that can be observed ,
touched , or collected and later analysed in the lab to help supporut
the investigation.Physical evvidence is crucial in criminal
investigations because it can help establish connections between
the suspect , a victim and the crime scene .
Furthermore it can be used to corroborate witness statemetn ,
support or refute any alibis , and play a significang told in the
prosecution of defense during the trial.
FACTORS TO CONSIDER WITH OUTDOOR CRIME SCENES?
There are different scenes that physical evidence can be found out,
however an outdoor scene is the most vunerable scene to loss or
contamination of evidence.
Individuals who have acces to the crime scen may alter , destory or
contaminate evidence , ther eis a gretaer risk when investigators
fail to secure the scene properly , furthermore weather conditions ,
such as heat , cold ,or snow and rain can destroy or ruin
evidence.Evidence can also be contaminated , unabke to secure
evidecne ,animals or peole can alkso detsiry evidence.
LOCARDS EXHANGE PRINCIPLE? The concept known as Locards
exchange principle states that every time someone enters an
environment, something is added to and removed from it
suggesting an idea that a perpetrator will leave a trace linking them
to a scene. This principle is sometimes stated as ‘every contact
leaves a trace’ this applies to contact between individuals as well as
between an individual and a physical environment this could also be
, between an object.Regarding criminal investigations this principle is
seen as some trace of the scene left on the offender , some trace of
victim left on the offender and some trace of offender left on victim.
For example, a murder in the woods, th offender leaves their
footprints in the mood, and fibres from their scarf on the tree, and
the offender has the vicitms blood on their neck
PROCESS FOR PHYSCIAL EVIDENCE (Blood stains):
COLLECTION – Blood is collcted by SOCO’s who wear protective clothign
to avoid contamination.
