Context
- King James I payed Shakespeare – written in his favour therefore the
message is don’t kill kings. (Gun powder plot had happened the year
before, The Gunpowder Plot refers to the attempt to blow up the House
of Lords on the 5th of November, 1605 as the initial stage in a plan to
install a Catholic monarch in place of the Protestant James I.)
- Divine right of kings – Kings are chosen by God and should not be
challenged.
- Macbeth is written in 1606
- James I rules England at the time the play was written
- Macbeth is a historical king of Scotland, ruling between 1040- 1057

Macbeth- CONTRADICTIONS — ambitious, yet with a conscience
● FULL OF ANGUISH AND TORMENT-never enjoys the crown
● BECOMES DESPERATE+PARANOID BY END INFLUENCED BY LADY
MACBETH-he seems weak at first, but grows in evil
