Odisha
Key question to consider: How does the coastline management compare to that of
Holderness?

Location

 Eastern India, bordering the Bay of Bengal
 Has a relatively straight coastline of 480km
 Has an area of over 150,000km
 Has 6 major deltas feeding sediment to the area
 One of the areas of the world most prone to cyclonic activity and
damage
 Between Puri and Bhadrak is the stretch of coastline most
vulnerable to damage

Demographics, economy,

 61.8% are involved in agriculture (the amount it contributes to the
GDP is decreasing)
 Rice is the dominant crop and is grown on 77% of the area
 32.6% of the population live below the poverty line
 33% of the economy comes from raw material exports
 The service sector contributes around 50% of the GDP

Environmental Significance

 Chilika Lake is one of the world’s largest brackish lakes, a shallow
bar-built estuary with large areas of mudflats, and the largest
wintering ground for migratory birds, on the Indian sub-continent
 It is home to a local population of 155 Irrawaddy dolphins, which are
important drivers of tourism and also regarded as a sacred animal by
Laotians and Cambodians
 A 60km barrier beach which is home to white sands and dolphins
provides a lot of tourists pull
 This population is significant, as it is believed there are only 300
dolphins of this type left in the wild

Alternatives to coastal-based economic inputs

 ¾ of Odisha is covered in mountain ranges, which provide a tourist pull
and could also be used to rectify an ailing local economy if its coastline
can’t be saved
