Microorganism Classification:

Based on phenotypic and metabolic behaviour

Microorganisms named using the binomial nomenclature after Linnaeus



Systemic Nomenclature:

Binomial system used for bacteria/ fungi/ protozoa and viruses

Genus first (Capitals) species second (lower case)

Name is written in italics or is underlined




Phylogenetic Relationships:

Contains gene sequence of 16S or 18S ribosomal RNA, allowing these
relationships to be calculated

Gene of the rRNA can be amplified

Possible differences can be discovered and compared using computers

ED- Evolutionary difference
