LO: DNA errors and repair – mispairing, mutations and polymorphisms
Base pairing rules maintained to avoid mistakes leading to genome mutation
Polymerase proof reads strand, removes wrong nucleotide and adds the right
nucleotide
Sex cells not being repaired means inherited diseases can develop, and
regular cells producing cancer
Proofreading
DNA polymerase adds incorrect nucleotide
Mispaired nucleotide is removed by 3’→5’ proofreading
Correctly paired 3’ end allows addition of next nucleotide
Synthesis continues in 5’→ 3’ direction

Remove and replaces mis-placed pairs
Detects and amends insertions/deletions
