CMC is communication within a technological medium through which individuals
construct meaning. Used primarily for interpersonal communication.

What are the six characteristics of CMC? Briefly explain each. - ANSWER-- Digital:
Communicated through a digital medium which allows for fast transmission
- Editiability: Asynchronicity allows for messages to be edited which allows them to be
more thought out that FtF
- Visible/Opennness: Information and communication is much more visible and
accessible.
- Persistence: Messages and communication last for a long time
- Replicability: Messages are easily replicated and shared
- Richness: CMC has varying level of cues, typically less than FtF

What is the Theory of Media Synchronicity? - ANSWER-Theory that explains how
varying synchronicity defines our experience of communication and time. Elements are:
- Transmisson Velocity: Defines deliver speed, faster = more synchronous
- Rehersability: Ability to rehearse and fine tune a message, giving more time to craft a
message
= Reprocessability: Ability to rexamine and process a message before responding. Can
draw on previous communication.

How is time being shaped by CMC? - ANSWER-Theory of Media Synchronicity,

What is Temporal Expansion vs Temporal Compression - ANSWER-Temporal
Expansion is a lack of temporal boundaries, no longer a separation of work/life/school
based on time boundaries. Always accessible. Temporal Compression is trying to fit
many things into a single unit of time, multitasking.

When communication, we rely on non-verbals and without these communication is
much less involved and there is less warmth. Negative view of CMC.
- Lack of Social Context Hypothesis: CMC does not allow for the establishment of social
norms or context leading to more self-focused communication and deindividuation.

, - Media Richness Theory: Different mediums have different levels of richness and
necessary to choose a medium that has appropriate richness for the complexity of the
message. Richness is determined by # of cue systems supported, immediacy of
feedback, message personalization and potential for natural language.

What are t he adaptive theories of CMC? - ANSWER-- Social Information Processing
Theory: The same level of communication can be achieved through CMC but may take
more time and messages. Can even surpass FtF.
- Hyper personal model: People tend to view others more positively over FtF because
they make positive assumptions and people can be self-selective about what they
disclose.

What is Social Identification Model of Deindividuation Effects? (SIDE) - ANSWER-
People often identify on the basis of common group membership and CMC often
promotes group identification. Function of visual info is to cue individuating
identifications.

What are chronemics? - ANSWER-Chronemics are ways that time is used and
promoted in communication. Plays a big role in non-verbal communication.

What is Social Presence? Ambient Presence? - ANSWER-Social presence is the
feeling of being "there" when communicating with someone. Feeling psychologically
close and connected.

What is the definition of identity? The two dimensions? - ANSWER-Identity is a dynamic
process of self-construction across multiple dimensions
The two dimensions are:
- Private Self-Conciousness is the ability to examine/reflect personal goals, beliefs,
