Universal energy currency
energy is required for many biological processes

three main types:

syntheses of large molecules

transport of molecules

movement of an organism

this energy required is supplied by adenosine triphosphate (ATP

ATP is composed of three phosphate molecules, a pentose sugar and the nitrogenous
base, adenine

ATP is known as the universal energy currency because it is used for energy transfer in
all living things

How ATP releases energy

energy is required to break bonds and is released when bonds are formed

some energy is required to break a weak bond between one of the phosphate molecules
however lots of energy is released when a bond is formed to add the phosphate group
back on to the molecule, around 30.6 KJ/ mol is released
