-How does streaming make money & how does that impact musicians?
❖ Sponsored playlists, subscriptions, and advertisements.
❖ Artists are altering their music based on algorithms to maximize profits, raising
questions about the future of music.
➔ However, streaming services can help new artists exposure. Benefiting
labels & artists by increasing marketing and investing in new artists.
(Spotify and Apple Music pay based on the total share of streams)
-Hidden Cost:
❖ Child labor, mass production of smartphones, and computer components.
Streaming Services require huge energy power for its servers. As well as fiber-
optic cables and routes.
❖ Kyle Devine's book, “Decomposed: The Political Ecology of Music”, suggests that
streaming & downloading music generates around one hundred and ninety-four
million kg of greenhouse emissions.
● Advertising and public relations:
-Some of the common emotions used in advertising are happiness sadness, surprise,
fear, anger, and disgust. Each emotion has a different effect on the audience and
influences consumers' attitudes, behavior & decisions. They use emotions to create
associations, evoke empathy, or motivate action.
-Public Relations, involves building and maintaining relationships with the public, and
media, promoting the organization’s reputation.

Actions that are hidden from the public scrutiny.
1. Nothing happens by accident. There are no coincidences, no cock-ups.
2. Nothing is as it seems. Need to look beneath the surface to detect the actions
and the intentions.
3. Everything is connected.
● 5 Key Concepts:
-All media messages are constructed.
➔ Take apart media developments to show how they are made.
-Media messages shape our perception of reality.
➔ Give us a sense of reality. Attitudes, interpretations, and conclusions.
-Different Audiences, and perceptions of the same media.
➔ Provide materials to build our “reality”, but we arrange meanings according to
individual factors.
