Module 5 – Chapter 14 Neuronal Communication

Neurones
Neurone -Specialised cell which transmits impulses in action potentials
The role of a neurone is to transmit electrical impulses rapidly around the body

Structure of a Neurone
• Cell body – Contains the nucleus surrounded by cytoplasm. There is endoplasmic reticulum and
mitochondria which make neurotransmitters.
• Dendrons – Short extensions which come from the cell body, they divide into smaller branches called
dendrites and are responsible for transmitting electrical impulses towards the body
• Axons – Elongated nerve fibres that transmit impulses away from the body.

Types of neurone
Sensory neurone – Transmit impulses from sensory receptors in the cell to a relate, or motor neurone.
One dendron
Relay neurone - Transmit impulses between neurones, short axons and dendrons
Motor neurones – Transmit impulses from a relay neurone or sensory neurone to an effector, long
axon and short dendrites
