Unit 5 research project
The aim of my research project was to investigate into the amount of time different age groups
spend doing sporting activities across different year groups within Carlton Le Willows School.
Therefore I based my research around years 7 to 11 which is ages 11 to 16. In total we asked 501
people in total across two different houses. In order to collect the data we used questionnaires and
went round to different form groups, which had the specific years and ages we needed for the
research project. After this was collected I could look at the different sports each year take part in,
how much exercise they do a weather they have a job which affects their ability to take part in sport.
The results of my data was represented on Microsoft Excel. This clearly set out all the results a
meant I could create graphs of each result and compare the results across the different age groups.
Overall my hypothesis was proven right as my results showed a decrease in sport participation. My
research could identify to teams needed to recruit players which ages tend to quit sport. It could
also reflect on how sporting activities become harder for people to break into, whereby it’s hard to
continue into sports at older ages. This could also be intensified by the fact that older ages have
exams to deal with as well as a possible job, this leaves no time for sporting activities.

I chose this investigation because I felt investigating into the participation in sport amongst different
ages and the different factors surround this identifies possibly why there is less participation in
sport. I found it would be interesting to weather older ages still participate in sport because of
everything they have on at that age. I also found that myself that it would be difficult to continue
sport when I was around 15, which lead me to quit football. My research project lasted about 6
weeks, where we collected data from different forms and then write the data up within an excel
sheet.

Hypothesis
By the end of the project I expected to find that the older age groups participate in sport less than
younger age groups, as well as finding the factors surrounding this such as jobs outside of school. I
got a job at 16 which mean I couldn’t participate in sport as well.

Method
The first thing we did was create a questionnaire which intended to get the best possible
results for the research project. After this we went round every form within the school and
get each year group to complete the questionnaire. Once all the data was collected we put
the data into the excel sheet. Within this we put the 8 questions with different columns for
the answers. Because each participant is giving specific answers to each question it means I
can evaluate the data they have produced. As well as this the questions have direct
correlation to the hypothesis. Once this has been done I can create graphs which can be
evaluated to prove my hypothesis.
