Cardiovascular System
Components and Functions of the Cardiovascular System
- Blood: Fluid that carries nutrients and oxygen to the body’s
cells and removes waste products
- Heart: The muscular pump responsible for circulating blood
throughout the body
- Blood Vessels: The network of tubes through which blood
flows, including arteries, veins, and capillaries
The system performs several vital functions:
- Transport
o Gases: delivers oxygen from the lungs to the cells and
carries carbon dioxide from the cells back to the lungs
for exhalation
o Nutrients: carries digested nutrients from the digestive
system into the cells.
o Waste Products: Transports metabolic waste products
from the cells to the kidneys for excreation.
- Thermoregulation: Regulates body temperature by adjusting
blood to the skin to control heat loss
- Haemostasis: Promotes blood clotting through platelets and
clotting proteins to prevent excessive bleeding through injury.
- Defence: Protects the body from pathogens through white
blood cells and antibodies
- Infromation: Transports hormones acting as chemical
messengers to different parts of the body.
