, Unit 1: Exploring Business
Introduction
In this assignment, I will compare the features of Asda and the RSPCA. First, I will explain the
features of two contrasting businesses. Then I will explain how two contrasting businesses
are influenced by stakeholders. Next, I will explore the organisation structures, aims and
objectives of two contrasting businesses. Then I will analyse how the structures of two
contrasting businesses allow each to achieve its aims and objectives. I will then assess the
relationship and communication with stakeholders of two contrasting businesses using
independent research. Finally, I will evaluate the reasons for the success of two contrasting
businesses, reflecting on evidence gathered.

P1 - Explain the features of two contrasting businesses.

ASDA
Asda is a British retailer, which was founded 70 years ago in 1949 by Peter and Fred Asquith
and Sir Noel Stockdale. The company is currently the second largest food retailer in the UK
with 635 stores around the country. The business is a subsidiary company owned by Wal-
Mart however still has its own British management team and board. Asda currently sells a
variety of products ranging from groceries to furniture etc. and offers many financial
services such as its own store card and loans.

Ownership & Liability
Asda is a public limited company owned by the American company Wal-Mart. The business
is owned by shareholders and anyone can buy a share of the company. The company has
limited liability so therefore if Asda were to ever get into debt, the shareholders would only
lose their investment in the business and nothing more.
Asda is also part of the private sector so therefore their main intention is to make profit.
This means the government has no control over the running of the business, unlike the
public sector of the economy, which is stately owned and controlled by the government.

Purpose
Asda is one of the largest supermarket retailers in the UK and sells a variety of products such
as groceries, clothes, furniture and other products. The business also offers financial
services such as its own store card, loans, different insurance covers, foreign currency
exchange services and money transfers. Asda has the slogan ‘save money, live better’ which
highlights that their main objective is to make their customers happy by providing high
quality products with cheap prices while also making profits for the company’s
shareholders.

Industrial Sector
Within the economy, businesses are classified into different sectors: primary, secondary,
tertiary and quaternary.
