P2: Web article on Oxfam
Oxfam is a registered federation of 20 self-sustaining charitable organisations which focuses
on the alleviation of the global poverty. It has been helping out millions of people with food,
shelter and clothing. Although the organisation raises money, it doesn’t make any profit since
it’s a charity. Oxfam is an international and a non-governmental organisation, which was first
founded at Oxford, England. It’s focusing on the poverty eradication, as it researches and
finds out new ideas to save as many lives as they can. It’s known to be a major non-profit
group with a great collection of operations. One of its biggest aim is to remove famine from
the world, and therefore works and campaigns with over 100 countries worldwide. This
organisation is a Public limited company as no one owns a charity organisation. It’s operating
globally and helping out poor countries get out of scarcity and poverty. It also operates in the
tertiary sector and is known to be a very large organisation. Being a global movement for
change, Oxfam motivates people to contribute towards creating a secure, and a poverty free
future. This consists of help initiatives capacity building for poverty prone regions,
campaigns for changing polices at both, national as well as international levels, and also
providing help and assistance in emergency circumstances. For example, during a flood some
people from that region will lose their houses, and we’ll need help with food, shelter and
clothing. Oxfam will help them in such situations, if they reach out to them. The board of
trustees controls the organisational structure of Oxfam.
The workers at Oxfam don’t get paid, as the organisation only raises funds to help the needy.
Again, it’s a non-profit organisation. The workers of Oxfam won’t be called employees, as
they don’t get paid. They will be either called helpers or volunteers, since it’s a charity
organisation. Oxfam does strategic planning for direct 6 years. The vision of Oxfam goes like
this, “a world in which people can influence decisions that affect their lives, enjoy their
rights, and assume their responsibilities as full citizens of a world in which all human beings
are valued and treated equally”
Oxfam’s mission is “to help create lasting solutions to the injustice of poverty. We are a part
of global movement for change, empowering people to create a future that is secure, just, free
from poverty. We work to end poverty locally and globally, making this central to public and
political life in Wales”
