Learning aim D: Explore procedures to maintain health and safety and respond to accidents and
emergencies in health and social care settings.

P7: Explain how different procedures maintain health and safety in a selected health and social
care setting.

Procedures to Maintain Health and Safety

There are many procedures and responsibilities that health and social care settings must follow in
order to maintain health and safety and respond to accident and emergencies. There are different
types of health and safety procedures which all help workplaces be of safe practice in h&sc settings
e.g. professionals meeting service users and giving them the support, they need while fulfilling their
treatment to the best standards. This would have a positive impact on the service users as they will
feel supported mentally and physically and their dignity will remain. Also, they will feel safe taking
the treatment knowing it's in their best interest. However, professionals working in a h&sc setting
and other workplaces must follow procedures for their service users to be safe and be treated
equally and fairly.

Safe Moving and Handling of Equipment

Employers have the responsibility of ensuring that all care providers are trained in moving
and handling people and loads before they attempt and move or do a handling task in the
workplace.

Safe moving and handling of equipment and individuals procedures are used to ensure service users
receive the best quality and safe care. This is really important at Beeches Drop-in Centre because if
one of their service users came in drunk and passed out on the floor, it is important that the staff
safely move them into a chair for their own protection. This needs to be done by:1. Wash your hands
with antibacterial soap and water2. Place the chair next to the patientTell them you are going to
move them into the chair4. Use your hands to roll the patient onto the same side as the chair and
into a sitting position facing the chair5. Put a gait belt on the patient if they cannot stay upright on
their own6. Lock your hands behind the patient or at the gait belt7. Place the patient furthest away
leg from the chair between your feet8. Stand and lift the patient, pivoting towards the chair9. Lower
the patient into the chair10. Confirm if they patient is ok, “how do you feel?”

P8: Explain the health and safety responsibilities of employers, employees and other in selected
health and social care settings.
