Undertake calorimetry to understand cooling curves

Paraffin wax cooling curve experiment
Charley McClellan
Group L

Pass

This is a report in the analysis and evaluation of determining the rate of cooling of paraffin
wax, written by Charley McClellan, a technical assistant at Chemcalequip.

Purpose

The aim of this experiment was to determine the patterns of cooling for 2 different
substances.

Hypothesis

I predict from the cooling curve that the temperature will rapidly decrease and then it will
reach a point of equilibrium and level out for a certain period due to changing state from a
liquid to a solid(freezing ) and then continue to drop steadily due to the continual cooling and
then will continue to decrease slowly when it is a solid.

Equipment used
● Clamp
● Thermometer
● Boiling tube
● Paraffin wax
● Beaker
● Warm water

Method
1. Melt the wax via the hot water bath and then remove the boiling tube from the water
via the clamp stand arrangement
2. Measure the temperature of the wax and observe the rising value
3. Once the temperature of the molten wax has stopped rising, start the clock. Let the
wax cool within the boiling tube (held by the clamp stand)
4. Take temperature readings every minute from around 75℃ (the starting
temperature.)

Data table

The results that were accurately obtained from following the procedure in the method above
were carefully recorded on a table of results. The recordings were accurate whereby the
temperature of the stearic acid decreased per minute. This means that the cooling Curve
that was drawn from these results would give a correct conclusion.
