Stearic Acid cooling curve experiment

Pass
This is a report in the analysis and evaluation of determining the rate of cooling of
Stearic Acid, written by Charley McClellan, a technical assistant at Chemcalequip.
Purpose
The aim of this experiment was to determine the patterns of cooling for 2 different
substances.
Hypothesis
I predict from the cooling curve that the temperature will rapidly decrease and then it
will reach a point of equilibrium and level out for a certain period due to changing
state from a liquid to a solid(freezing ) and then continue to drop steadily due to the
continual cooling and then will continue to decrease slowly when it is a solid.
Equipment used
● Clamp
● Thermometer
● Boiling tube
● Stearic acid
● Beaker
● Warm water
Method
1. Obtain a suitable quantity of stearic acid and place it into a boiling tube
2. Place the boiling tube into a beaker of freshly boiled water
3. Place a thermometer into the boiling tube
4. As the stearic acid heats up it will begin to melt
5. The record the highest temperature of the now liquid stearic acid
6. Remove the boiling tube from the beaker of hot water and allow to cool
7. Record the temperature overall a period of time at set intervals
8. Produce a graph
9. Analyse your results
Data table
The results that were accurately obtained from following the procedure in the
method above were carefully recorded on a table of results. The recordings were
accurate whereby the temperature of the stearic acid decreased per minute. This
