Butler’s model
• This model is put in place to check the way that tourist’s resorts are growing.
The travel industry is constantly changing. The butlers model is a way of
seeing what stage an organisation is at
• Exploration - a small number of tourists visit the area. The area is un spoilt
and few tourist facilities exist.
• Involvement - local people start to provide some facilities for tourists. There
starts to become a recognized tourist season.
• Development - the host country starts to develop and advertise the area. The
area becomes recognized as a tourist destination.
• Consolidation - the area continues to attract tourists. The growth in tourist
numbers may not be a fast as before. Some tensions develop between the
host and the tourists.
• Stagnation - the facilities for the tourists may decline as they become old and
run down. The numbers of tourists may decline too.
• Rejuvenation - investment and modernization may occur which leads to
improvements and visitor numbers may increase again.
• Decline - if the resort is not rejuvenated (stage 6) then it will go into decline.
People lose their jobs related to tourism. The image of the area suffers.
• Barcelona is between stages 5 and 6. However Iceland is between the stages
of 2 and 3. This shows that Barcelona is further ahead I the butler’s model
than Iceland is. Barcelona is overcrowded and is stagnant and leaning
towards decline however Iceland is thriving destination that is still growing.
Growth of Leisure travel
This is when there is more leisure tourism to destinations. This includes short breaks
and activity holidays.
Barcelona is a city destination and if more people are taking city breaks. Then it
means that Barcelona could have more if people are choosing to take city beaks.
This will have a negative impact on Barcelona as a tourist destination because it
means that they will become more overcrowded and lead them into decline. In the
ABTA travel trends report it shows that the western Mediterranean is more popular
with large visitor numbers but there are now more indications that people are
travelling back to the eastern countries as they have seen a rise such as turkey
which has seen a 69% growth in the summer of 2018. This is a continued trend and
will affect Barcelona because it will be less over crowded. This will make the locals
happier because there is less tourists. However this could negatively impact
Barcelona’s reputation and could make them earn less as a tourist destination.
Barcelona is not much of an activity destination as it provides generic excursions that
can be found in other destinations. Also in the travel trends report it mentions about
