Social influence

Situational variables:
• Samples were all from the same area with very few
women included so were not representative of obedience
in the whole population
• highly standardised and controlled experiments are very
reliable
• The sample was self-selected by advertisement so the
participants were more likely to follow orders
• Qualitative and quantitative data collected> credible and
scientific

Locus of control ( resistance to social influence ):

• the LOC self-report inventory has been standardised and
used over vast samples, increasing its validty
• Avtgis used a meta analysis to investigate LOC and
conformity> results showed those with internal locus
were more resistant to persuasion and less likely to
conform
• Holland show the internal locus people show greater
resistance to authority in replication of milgrams study

Social support ( presence of people who resist pressures to
conform or obey help others to do same ) :

• When a dissenter was introduced, both conformity and
obedience levels dropped asch (5.5%) milgram (10%) >

, having an ally can build confidence and allow individuals
to remain independent> legitimacy reduced
• Albrecht et Al> 8 week programmed designed to help
pregnant teens to resist peer pressure to smoke and found
when social support was provided by a slightly older
buddy teens were less likely to smoke than control
group> shows social support help to resist social
influence
• Gamson et Al asked participants to work in groups to
gather evidence to run a smear campaign for a company>
found higher levels of resistance in their study than
milgrams> probably cuz they were in groups- 88%
rebelled showing peer support is linked to greater
resistance

• Case study of HM who lost his hippocampus in an
operation leaving him unable to learn new things in LTM
while retaining the ability to remember short strings of
digits in STM> individuals 2 separate stores
• Too simplistic> research using scanning techniques show
that the idea of just 3 stores is too simple. For LTMS
more memory stores and scans show these are different
• Studies on coding, capacity and duration in STM and
LTM have shown research evidence for separate stores

Interference:
• Baddeley and hitch asked rugbly players to recall the
names of the teams they had played against during the
rugby season> found players who played most games had
