The time management and targets document that helped me score 50/50 in my EPQ. The layout and categories may be helpful as a starting point for students to create their own as well as understanding the level of detail that is needed to acquire higher marks.

Target Date to Date set Did I Reflection
be achieve
achieved it?
Initial research 20/9/22 3/9/22 Yes After starting my reading of articles over
on my topic- the summer, I wanted to set a date after
understand the mocks where I could sit down and
origins of fairy collate my introductory findings on a
tales word document. This included research
of the origin of the fairy tale as well as
the definition of gender roles and
research behind the psychology of the
roles.

Decide what fairy 30/9/22 3/9/22 Yes When researching, I found myself
tales and writers overwhelmed with the amount of
I wish to focus on versions of classical fairy tales such as
Cinderella. I knew I had to narrow this
down and after a discussion with my
EPQ advisor decided to do paragraphs
on writers rather than fairy tales.

Initial research 7/10/22 1/10/22 Yes I feel like I have completed this to a
on Grimms certain extent. Whilst I have
Brothers accumulated a lot of initial research I
think there is a few more fairy tales I
wish to focus on that show diversity and
not just the princess trope.

Grimms Brother’s 12/10/22 1/10/22 Yes I have analysed the fairy tale with
Cinderella annotations regrading my opinion with
how women are presented in this tale.
One of the main portrayals of women
seen is as “jealous” and “competitive”
between one another especially
surrounding the topic of male suitors.

Grimms Brothers 12/10/22 1/10/22 Yes This fairy tale was different to Cinderella
Little Red Riding in many ways. Here female vulnerability
Hood was focused on as well as trickery.

, Grimms Brothers 15/10/22 1/10/22 Yes I believe this tale had elements of both
Snow White Cinderella and Little red riding hood. The
jealousy of female characters was seen
in snow whites mother, perpetuated by
the notion that beauty equates to
happiness. Female vulnerability was
seen at the end of the tale where snow
white dies, only to be recovered by a
prince who notices her for beauty
despite her being deceased.

Introduction 26/10/22 15/10/22 Yes I have completed an initial draft of my
introduction, however I understand this
is something I may have to change as I
accumulate more research on my other
two sections. I plan to acquire feedback
on this research from my EPQ advisor.

Research on 31/10/22 17/10/22 Yes From initial research of Hans Christian
Hans Christian Andersen, I predict his views of women
Andersen to be more liberating due to the time
and culture he is writing in. There is also
elements of his sexuality and views on
women which perhaps could influence
these views.

Hans Christian 31/10/22 17/10/22 Yes Whilst I expected Hans Christian
Andersen Little Andersen to be a more liberating writer
Mermaid for women. The first tale I have looked
at show repeated tropes from the
Grimm Brothers. Ariel aims to change
herself for men, like we see Cinderella
do however unlike the Grimm Brothers
Andersen did not provide a satisfactory
happy ending for his female character.
