1.5 Practical investigation
What is the aim?
To investigate whether people in one age group will hold negative attitudes
about people in a different age group (for example, younger vs older).
What is the alternative hypothesis?
Both older and younger people (as measured through age, older >35 years
and younger <21 years) will show higher levels of in-group favouritism and out
group hostility (as measured via average responses to likeliness scale
questions and open-ended responses).
sample?
1. A targeted sampling (because ideally we want a 50/50 split between
Younger and Older as designated. We AIMED to get 20 of each group
sampled.
2. Also Opportunity: We will aim for a first come, first used system to get as
many Ps as we can under the limited time available
method?
using a questionnaire with both open and closed questions.
pilot study?
A ‘pilot study’ which is an essential part of good practical research. Any
questions which may be phrased in such a way to cause embarrassment, or
distress which have been overlooked will then be changed.
