Bacteriology - ANS-The study of small, simple, single celled bacteria
Mycology - ANS-The study of fungi
Protozoology - ANS-The study of single celled eukaryotic organisms
Virology - ANS-The study of viruses
Parisitology - ANS-The study of parasitic organisms (pathogenic protozoa, helminth
worms)
Cellular organization - ANS-2 basic cell types: eukaryotic, procaryotic
Eukaryotic cells - ANS-Complex cell types which contain organelles
Procaryotic cells - ANS-Simple cells which do not contain organelles (bacteria)
Organelles - ANS-Membrane bound compounds that separate cellular activities
Viruses - ANS-Consist of nucleic acid, surrounded by protein coat. Not considered alive
Spontaneous generation - ANS-Prior to the invention of the microscope, it was believed
life arose from non-living matter
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1650) - ANS-First to visualize microbes, used crude

Francisco Redi - ANS-Experiments which consisted of jars of meat covered and
uncovered, to disprove spontaneous generation.
John Needham - ANS-Proponent of spontaneous generation; used broth experiments
(boiled, not boiled, but both exposed to air.)
