Exemplar assignment for Unit 6B, the second assignment in BTEC Applied Science Unit 6 (Investigative Project), which involves making a plan for your investigation. I chose to base my Unit 6 project on how concentration affects the rate of diffusion. This assignment was awarded a DISTINCTION. If you take anything from this assignment, please put it in your own words otherwise it will count as plagiarism! I hope this helps you with your own project!

Unit 6: Investigative Project

B: Produce a plan for an investigative project based on the proposal

Project planning
Introduction
In this assignment, I will be generating a working plan for my experiment on how different concentrations of
hydrochloric acid affect the rate of diffusion within agar, whilst taking into account any constraints and health and
safety considerations.

Schedule

Materials and equipment
● 1% phenolphthalein solution
● Agar powder
● Balance x 1
● Bunsen burner x 1
● 100ml conical flask x 3
● 100ml beaker x 4
● Stopclock x 1
● Clear ruler x 1
● Distilled water
● 2M hydrochloric acid
● Scalpel x 1

, Unit 6: Investigative Project

B: Produce a plan for an investigative project based on the proposal

● 50ml measuring cylinder x 4
● Stirring rod

Method
1. Prepare different concentrations of hydrochloric acid using the serial dilution method (see Appendix 1.1).
2. Prepare 2x2 cm3 agar cubes (see Appendix 1.2).
3. Pour 50 ml of 0.5M hydrochloric acid into an 80 ml beaker.
4. Place one agar cube into the beaker and immediately start the stopclock.
5. Stop the stopclock when all of the pink colour has disappeared from the agar.
6. Record the time taken for the agar to turn colourless in a results table.
7. Repeat steps 1-6 for the remaining concentrations of hydrochloric acid.
8. Calculate the mean time taken for agar to go colourless for each concentration.

9. Calculate the rate of diffusion by using the formula:
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝑡𝑎𝑘𝑒𝑛 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑐𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑜𝑐𝑐𝑢𝑟
