5 Physiological investigations that are carried out in a hospital

● Audiology procedures
Diagnostic test in audiology

Pure tone audiometry

Description: You will wear headphones and press a button each time you hear a bleep
sound.
Purpose: Hearing test that checks the thresholds of hearing across a range of frequencies
(pitches).

Tympanometry
Duration: 1 minute
Description: You will have a soft sensor placed into the ear then feel an air pressure change
occur in the ear canal.
Purpose: Auditory test that checks the movement of the ear drum and middle ear system.

Speech audiometry
Duration: 30 minutes
Description: You will listen to words coming through headphones and repeat them back to
the Audiologist. The words are presented at different loudness throughout the test.
Purpose: Hearing test that checks the ability to recognise speech.

There are several more tests done in the audiology background but these are some
examples, also the purpose and diagnostic out of this tests.

● Bone densitometry assessments.

Bone Density Test
A bone density test is the only test that can diagnose osteoporosis before a broken bone
occurs. This test helps to estimate the density of your bones and your chance of breaking a
bone. NOF recommends a bone density test of the hip and spine by a central DXA machine
to diagnose osteoporosis. DXA stands for dual energy x-ray absorptiometry.
You can find out whether you have osteoporosis or if you should be concerned about your
bones by getting a bone density test. Some people also call it a bone mass measurement
test. This test uses a machine to measure your bone density. It estimates the amount of
bone in your hip, spine and sometimes other bones. Your test result will help your healthcare
provider make recommendations to help you protect your bones.
