This essay was completed as practice for the GCSE examination. It was marked by my history teacher and received full marks (12/12). I have called this a "grade 9" essay because to achieve an overall grade 8-9 on the paper, your 12 and 16 mark responses must be close to full marks. The content in this essay is specific to the Early Elizabethan England course, but the structure can be used for any History exam paper.

Q: Explain why Raleigh’s first colony to Virginia failed (12 marks)

You may use:
-The native Algonquians
-Damage to the ship, The Tiger

You must also use information of your own

One reason why the first colony to Virginia failed was due to damage to
the ship, The Tiger. This ship carried most of the gunpowder, food and
crop seeds the colonists needed in Virginia, and much of the cargo was
damaged when the ship hull was breached. This meant that crops could
not be planted in time for them to yield and provide produce for the
colonist’s families, and much of the food was unconsumable due to the
salt-water from the sea. This led to the colonists having to rely on the
natives for food and water-causing tension between them. In addition to
this, the gunpowder carried by the ship was damaged, meaning that
hunters were unable to hunt for game such as deer (a source of food for
the people). Therefore, the first colony in Virginia failed due to damage to
the ship, The Tiger.

In addition to this, many artisans and wealthy businessmen came to
Virginia on the promise of gold and easy wealth. The men had been
promised by Raleigh that gold was readily available, and they believed
that they would be able to get rich quickly. However, when they came to
Virginia, many of the artisans did not have the raw materials that they
needed for their work. As well as this, farmers were also unwilling to work
for the wealthier men from England, which caused conflict between the
colonists. In addition to this, the soldiers brought over from England were
ill disciplined and poorly skilled to work the land. This enhanced the
conflict between the colonists and brought the colonisation down from the
inside, with one soldier being shot and his dead body left as a reminder to
the insubordinate. Therefore, the first colony in Virginia failed due to false
hopes created amongst the British and conflict within the colony.

Furthermore, the Native Algonquians and their chief, Winging, became
bitter towards the colonists. The colonists often demanded food and
resources from the natives, especially as the hardship of winter set in, and
the chief soon became hostile towards them. Furthermore, he believed
that the colonists had been given mysterious powers from God against the
natives, because whenever the colonists left an area, the natives would
mysteriously die. (These mysterious ‘powers’ were, of course, diseases
carried over from England that the natives had never been exposed to).
This caused chief Winging to encourage the other chiefs to carry out a
revolt against the English. This resistance from the Algonquians meant
