EMS620U – Analysis in Medical Imaging
Sample Exam Questions + Answers
Question 1
a) Describe, using diagrams, instance, semantic, and panoptic segmentations.
[9 marks]
3 marks awarded for each definition, with including a clear definition (1), description
of use (1) and diagram illustrating an example (1).
b) For segmentation, state and briefly explain two common approaches for
simple thresholding of an image. [4 marks]
1 mark given for naming global and adaptive thresholding, with 1 additional
mark each for a brief description of the methods.
c) Explain, using diagrams, a method you could use to decide on which
thresholds to use in when segmenting an image. [7 marks]
1 mark awarded for naming, for example, the Gaussian Mixture Method.
Marks awarded for clearly explaining the how a Gaussian curve can be fit to a
histogram of an image (2), why this is useful and how it could be applied in the
clinic (2), and a diagram that conveys this method clearly (2).
Question 2
a) Explain, using diagrams, the concept behind CT imaging, the physical
phenomenon underlying the imaging modality, and how at CT machine works.
[10 marks]
2 marks for defining CT as Computed Tomography and explaining that it
involved rotating an emitter and sensor along the longitudinal axis of the body
to gather a z-stack of images. 2 marks for using diagrams to explain this
clearly. 2 marks for explaining that X-rays are the actual physical phenomena
used to capture the image, and how this differs from traditional X-ray imaging.
2 marks for explaining that the images are reconstructed using image
processing to make a 3D visual representation of the internal organs.
b) State and explain 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of CT scans. Give an
example of when it would be most useful to use a CT scan over other imaging
methods. [7 marks]
1 mark each for naming and explaining 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages (4
total). 1 mark awarded for naming, for example, imaging of bone as a useful
