SHN2004 (Acute Care) – Field Lead Discussion 6th September 2021
Module Leaders (Various) 2-3pm

Field Lead Discussion

Expectations for Year 2
 Challenge yourself personally and professionally  developing the skills you already
have
o Knowledge, clinical skills/practice, moving from being a student nurse to a
professional nurse
 Developing personal and clinical skills – moving away from observation to actually
practising your clinical skills
 Improve organisation skills
 Improve and make better use of reflection
 Improving interpersonal skills  not just being knowledgeable about nursing care
and practice but also dealing with/engaging with patient (and family)

Problems with Year 1
 Issues surrounding communication (generic)  e.g. not being sent zoom codes or
getting access to the information when be taught as a complete cohort

Moving into Year 2 and Year 3
 You need to do your OWN study – lectures only provide the outline. You are
considered an adult learner and must develop your own learning  you are an
independent adult learner
 Online learning is here to stay (at least in some capacity)
o Make use of all the various ways of online learning that are provided  it
allows you to learn at your own pace and also to revisit lectures/resources.
 It is possible to ascertain how often people are logging into and accessing canvas
o You have a legal responsibility to undertake your requisite number of theory
hours.
 Your lecturers/mentors are available to you – to a degree even more so than in
‘normal’ face to face learning.
 Zoom etiquette:
o Punctuality is vital
o Cameras should be on (where possible)
o Make sure you are up and dressed when attending lectures
 Read the feedback provided on your assessments
 Leave feedback via the appropriate avenues – i.e. lecturers and official Swansea
University feedback mechanisms
 Social Media Use  Policy will be emailed to every student
 Ensure that you are wearing the appropriate uniform,
 You must ensure that you are working the shift pattern assigned – when that isn’t
possible then it needs to be discussed. You cannot unilaterally decide to change –
negotiate the change with the appropriate person
 Your work
o Use good quality and robust sources
o You need to be engage in more analysis than description – this is only
possible with engaging with lectures and making sure you are going beyond
the lectures and reading
